Information for Parents
We are delighted your son or daughter is interested in MUN. We encourage you to browse this site (www.oregonmun.com) and learn what your children are learning. Faculty advisors committed to Model United Nations are passionate about MUN for the following reasons and more: Students fulfill many SIMS and CAM requirements Students learn about the modern world in logical and organized ways Students are held accountable for their learning through a formal credentialing process in February and March.
Student learn public speaking and negotiation. They learn to walk in the shoes of people from another country and culture Students become mini experts in topics such as global health, global security, economic development, disarmament and other topics current in the world today. Students learn rules for committee debate Students learn about the United Nations – its strengths and weaknesses
There are some basic facts about the annual April Conference which we want you to know:
1. Dress Code: students are to dress in basic western business dress including shoes.
2. The Oregon High School International Relations League Model United Nations is not responsible for student behavior. However, we monitor it. Students who break Oregon State Laws or act in ways not in sympathy with the functioning of OHSIRL-MUN may be asked to leave the conference.
3. While in Eugene, all students are under the care and control of their own high school rules and advisors.
4. No student should drive to Eugene, in Eugene or from Eugene, rather each student should be on the busses or transportation provided by their school systems.
5. There is a nightly curfew of midnight set by OHSIRL-MUN. Some schools ask students to observe earlier curfews. That is the right of the school and advisor. Students should obey the earlier curfew.
6. Students are expected to be at all scheduled MUN events
7. Students are to turn their cell phones off during committee meetings. If you need to reach your student you can leave him or her a message to pick up between sessions, or you can contact the advisor (or use the system for contacting students set up by the high school). If you have questions, please contact your high schooler’s MUN advisor.
